In 1872 the first census of Bengal was taken by British Indian Government. It showed 53% Hindus in undivided Bengal or what is now West Bengal & Bangladesh! In the next decadal census in 1881 however Hindus became only 49% or minority for the first time. This was mainly due to settlement of Bengali Hindus throughout British India for better livelihood.
The Hindus of East Bengal suffered mostly due to various reasons. In 1770 the Great Famine of Bengal occurred in which 2/3rd of Bengal’s population perished! Most of the dead were Hindus as Hindus were till then in good majority. Also, it was the period of Dual Admnistration of Murshidabad Nawab and Britishers from Kolkata. Naturally none cared. The Sannyasi Rebellion took place in this back drop. Bankim Chandra Chatterjee the great novelist of Bengal penned the Anandamath and Vande Mataram in it.
Next big famines took place in 1890 & 1893 and total 3 millions perished according to estimates. Again most of the dead were Hindus as it took place in Hindu majority belt of South Central Bengal.
Then came the man made disaster of 1944 Famine during II World War under the Muslim League Government of Nazimuddin in undivided Bengal. Again 3 millions perished and the worst side of it was that the Muslim led Government of Bengal (which had already become Muslim majority) provided relief to only the Muslims and ignored the Hindus and majority deaths were that of Hindus. Some Hindu leaders organized relief without any religious discrimination but those were far short of the requirements.
In East Bengal/Bangladesh destruction took place in 1970 in the form of Super Cyclone and Tsunami in which another 3 millions perished. The number 3 million has been a curse for Bengali Hindus for long. In this calamity both Hindus & Muslims were equally affected but Hindu suffering was more from the point that it occurred in the Hindu heartland of South West Bangladesh. From this period South West Bangladesh which was earlier Hindu majority (52% in 1941) turned Muslim majority! Needless to say the Muslim Government did not send any relief and whatever came from World bodies were distributed mostly among the Muslim population.
Then came the mass killings of 1971 in which the Pakistan Government in Bangladesh killed 3 million of which according to their estimates 80% or about 2.4 million were Hindus. Many also died in the Liberation War of Bangladesh which was start of another round of slavery for Bangladeshi Hindus.
Thus, we see that Hindus who formed 45% in undivided Bengal of West Bengal & Bangladesh in 1947 during Partition has reduced to 28% in this region in 2001 census! Also, Hindus in Bangladesh alone has decreased from 30% to 9% during the same period. Hindus have no voice and Muslims like Shahriar Kabir and Tasleema Nasrin who support the Hindu cause are declared atheists and enemy of Bangladesh! Besides, killings and torture rape of women and children is the political weapon of Bangladeshi Muslims against Hindus. Recently, Two girls - Supama (8 years old) and Sulekha Das (7 years old) are raped in Bhola, Barisal. Their father is forced to watch and is strangled and killed when he tries to help his daughters. Supama dies. Sulekha was hospitalised. Rita Rani Das (8 years old)
Strangely enough, in West Bengal state of India the bastion of Bengali Hindus inspite of absorbing millions of Hindu refugees from Bangladesh the Hindu percentage has declined from 85% in 1947 to about 70% in 2001. This is mainly due to 2 reasons. About 1.5 crore Muslims from Bangladesh have infiltrated and settled here. Then perhaps the most disturbing factor is from 1981 the Hindu population of West Bengal has remained static and even seen negative growth recently. Due to this low reproductive rate mainly among Bengali Hindus of West Bengal they have diminished from 5 crore 5 million in 1981 to 5 crore 4 million in 2001 or 1 million less. Causes are mainly late marriage and having 1 or 2 children by Hindus. The Left Front Government in West Bengal and Congress in Assam support Muslim Bangladeshi infiltration for vote bamk politics but on the name of industrialisation are grabbing lands of Indian Muslims in western part of West Bengal!
